2026 India monsoon: expanding floods and alerts
Entities: Odisha · Delhi · India Meteorological Department · Bay of Bengal · Uttar Pradesh
Overview
The southwest monsoon intensified throughout late July 2026, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a cascade of red, orange and yellow warnings across most of the country. By July 22 red alerts covered districts in Gujarat, Odisha and several northern states, while orange warnings stretched to Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh and others.
Gujarat bore the brunt of the deluge: more than 260 talukas recorded 15–19 inches of rain in a 24‑hour span, flooding low‑lying areas, swelling the Narmada basin and prompting high‑alert advisories. Rescue operations rescued over 40,500 people and reported five fatalities. Similar flooding and landslide risks were reported in Assam (over 650 000 affected, 66 deaths), Haryana, Delhi‑NCR, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
Mumbai was placed under a yellow alert as flash‑flood warnings triggered train cancellations and traffic jams, coinciding with Section 144 orders amid NEET exam protests. Delhi‑NCR saw a succession of yellow and orange alerts from July 27‑31, warning of moderate to heavy rain, flooding and power cuts.
Western and eastern coastal states continued to face heavy to very heavy rain. A low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal brought 120 mm of rain in Odisha on July 24, with the IMD forecasting four days of intense rain and rough seas, prompting fishermen to stay ashore. By July 26 a marked depression was expected to deepen and cross the Odisha‑West Bengal coast, leading to red warnings for nine Odisha districts and further orange/yellow alerts.
Across the nation, authorities have urged residents to avoid travel in vulnerable zones, stay alert for landslides, and follow shelter‑in‑place guidance while rescue teams remain on standby.
