Assam Flood Displaces Over 22,000, Destroys 300‑Metre Bridge

Heavy monsoon rains have caused the Brahmaputra and its tributaries to overflow in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Six districts in Assam – Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibru‑Garh, Chirang, Lakhipur and Kokrajhar – report more than 22,124 people directly affected, 69 villages submerged, about 1,690 hectares of farmland damaged and roughly 48,200 livestock lost.

Dhemaji district bears the brunt, with over 15,000 residents in crisis. A 300‑metre iron railway bridge over the Kemi (Kemi) River collapsed, halting rail services between Archi Pathar and Simen Chapari. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has deployed ministers to monitor relief work, and Home Minister Amit Shah discussed the situation with the chief minister, pledging central assistance. State authorities are conducting rescue and relief operations for the affected families.
