Assam floods and river erosion displace villages and destroy schools

Over the past two decades, the Brahmaputra River has eroded more than a dozen villages in the Dakshin Ahatguri area of Assam, swallowing schools, health centres and homes. Residents say no effective government resettlement or compensation has been provided and they are urging officials to rebuild lost infrastructure and relocate displaced families.

In Dibrugarh district, the monsoon‑driven rise of the Buri Dehing River has submerged Janzimukh village and 84 other villages, affecting about 13,390 people. Villagers rely on small boats to move through flood‑covered streets, and many have taken shelter in traditional stilt houses. They have called for additional relief supplies and longer‑term measures to curb future erosion after the water recedes.
