Assam floods cause 107 deaths and affect 1.37 million people

Assam is facing a severe humanitarian and environmental crisis as ongoing floods have resulted in 107 deaths and affected approximately 1.37 million people across 10 districts. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, flooding has impacted 456 villages and submerged nearly 11,933 hectares of agricultural land. Districts such as Golaghat and Sivasagar have reported the highest numbers of affected residents and inundated farmland.

Meteorologist Prof BN Goswami has warned that the state’s climate crisis is becoming increasingly difficult to reverse. He attributed the worsening conditions to unplanned urbanization, the destruction of hills, and the loss of tree canopy, which have directly contributed to landslides and urban flooding in Guwahati. Prof Goswami noted that increased sedimentation in the Brahmaputra River and the continued burning of fossil fuels are further aggravating the situation.

Relief efforts are currently underway, with 125 relief facilities established to support thousands of displaced residents. While several rivers, including the Dhansiri (South) and Kushiyara, have crossed danger levels, authorities are continuing rescue operations using medical teams and boats to evacuate those in high-risk areas.
