Assam floods cause widespread devastation and displacement
The northeastern Indian state of Assam is facing a severe flood crisis caused by relentless monsoon rains. The flooding has displaced hundreds of thousands of people, destroyed homes, and caused significant damage to agricultural lands and infrastructure. Survivors have described the scale of the disaster as being akin to a tsunami.
In the aftermath, various relief efforts are underway. Moon Ali Goria, a member of the Goria-Moria-Desi organization, has been working to restore religious sites in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat. Goria has provided replacement religious texts, including the Bhagavad Gita and the Quran, to both Hindu and Muslim places of worship, such as temples, namghars, and mosques, that were damaged by mud and debris.
Relief operations have also faced logistical challenges. Following an incident where a relief team led by social worker Samay Gogoi was allegedly blocked from transporting bamboo poles for house reconstruction, Bihubar Tea Estate authorities issued an apology. The estate management met with local groups and police to assure that such delays in humanitarian assistance would not recur.
