Assam floods kill 100 people and displace over 700,000

Severe monsoon flooding in Assam, India, has resulted in at least 100 deaths and the displacement of over 700,000 people. Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, have exceeded danger levels, inundating vast areas of agricultural land, destroying infrastructure, and causing significant livestock losses.

District-level reports indicate that Sivasagar has recorded 49 fatalities and Cachar has recorded 22. Among the deceased are 60 males, 23 females, and 18 children. While many residents have begun returning home as waters recede, approximately 49,000 people remain in 125 relief centers and aid hubs.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah have been inspecting affected regions, including Darrang, where embankment breaches have occurred. Minister Mallabaruah noted that pending strengthening work on certain embankments contributed to the damage. The state government has provided temporary financial assistance to approximately 50,000 people and is working to restore essential services and infrastructure.
