Assam Floods Kill Over 40, Displace More Than 7 Million People

Heavy monsoon rains and a cloudburst in neighbouring Nagaland have caused severe flooding across Assam’s 11 districts. The death toll has risen to at least 47, with more than 7.21 lakh (about 7 million) residents affected, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Sivasagar is the worst‑hit district, where roughly 3.9 lakh people are stranded, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the situation as “extremely grim,” noting that many villages remain cut off and that damage to homes, livestock and crops is “far greater than initially anticipated.” Relief operations involve the Indian Army, National and State Disaster Response Forces, helicopters and drones, with about 103 relief camps sheltering over 30 000 displaced persons. The central government has pledged financial assistance and an inter‑ministerial team is scheduled to visit the state to assess damage and coordinate reconstruction.
