Assam floods claim 31 deaths, impact over 5.6 million people

The flooding in Assam’s upper districts has killed a total of 31 people, with 21 deaths recorded in a single 24‑hour period. The worst‑hit district was Sivasagar, reporting 13 fatalities, followed by Charaideo (5), Golaghat (2) and Jorhat (1). Over 5.64 lakh (approximately 5.6 million) residents across 16 districts and 872 villages are affected. Relief camps—71 to 101 according to different reports—house between 9,600 and 12,300 displaced persons, and 202 distribution centres provide food and water. The disaster was triggered by an upstream cloudburst in Nagaland’s Mon district, which sent a sudden surge of water into the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inspected the hardest‑hit areas and vowed full assistance, including an ex‑gratia of Rs 4 lakh per deceased victim. Rescue and relief operations involve the Indian Army, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police. The state government continues to mobilise resources, activate intra‑circle mobile roaming in affected districts and request additional central aid as water levels remain above danger marks.
