Assam floods affect over 1 million people, death toll climbs past 50

Heavy monsoon rains have caused severe flooding across Assam, India. State authorities report that more than 10.6 lakh (over 1 million) residents in 25 districts have been impacted, with the worst‑hit areas in Upper Assam – Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat. The official death toll has risen to at least 51, with eight people still missing, and the number of casualties is expected to increase.

The state government is operating 162 relief camps sheltering over 41,000 evacuees and has established 1,072 relief‑distribution centres. Around 80,000 people in remote villages remain cut off from aid. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, the army and local administrations are using boats and helicopters to reach isolated communities. Power outages affect more than 60,000 households, and damage assessments are underway.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that an inter‑ministerial central team will arrive in Assam to evaluate damage and coordinate financial assistance for rehabilitation. Relief supplies, including food, water and medicines, continue to be delivered round‑the‑clock, while officials warn that further heavy rainfall could worsen the situation.
