Assam Floods Kill at Least 50, Displace 700,000 as Brahmaputra Overflows

Severe monsoon rains caused the Brahmaputra River to burst its banks in Assam, India, flooding nearly 900 villages and submerging 856 villages and 37 revenue circles. The disaster has claimed at least 50 lives, with death tolls later reported as 61 and then 62 in different updates. More than 700,000 people have been forced to leave their homes, and over 7,000 households remain without electricity.

State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said authorities are delivering food and relief supplies by helicopter, adding, "We have provided food and relief to the flood‑affected people through air drops." Police, disaster‑response teams and volunteers are rescuing stranded residents, while the National and State Disaster Response Forces have evacuated about 1,000 people. The floods have also devastated agriculture, inundating roughly 56,600 hectares of crops and killing tens of thousands of livestock. Relief camps now shelter around 3.15  lakh people.

Experts warned that climate‑change‑induced intensification of monsoons is increasing the frequency of such extreme flooding events.
