Assam floods kill 98, affect over 1.5 million across 13 districts
Heavy monsoon rains caused severe flooding in Assam, India, raising the death toll to 98. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported that more than 1,55,849 people in 13 districts were affected, covering 464 villages in 33 revenue circles.
The hardest‑hit districts were Golaghat (58,750 people), Shivsgar (48,286), Jorhat (25,259), Charai Dev (12,779), Nagaon (5,424), Darang (3,367) and Dhemaji (1,265). Floodwaters submerged about 10,748.64 hectares of crops and impacted roughly 47,000 livestock. Damage to housing included 126 homes fully destroyed and 344 partially damaged.
Relief efforts involved 73 camps sheltering 10,326 evacuees and distribution centres assisting another 6,881 people. Rescue teams numbered 219, supported by eight boats and medical units. Rivers Dhanasiri and Kushiyara rose above danger levels. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted a video consoling the parents of a 13‑year‑old boy who drowned while trying to save his dog, and Health Minister J. P. Nanda described the disaster as one that will take time to recover from.
