Assam Floods Kill One, Displace Over 46,000 Residents

Heavy rain caused the Brahmaputra and two other rivers in Assam to overflow on June 30, flooding six districts and affecting more than 46,000 people. A woman drowned in the village of Sisiborganj, Dhemaji, marking the first flood‑related death in the state this year. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported that 221 villages and 10 revenue circles across Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur and Biswanath were inundated, with 3809 hectares of agricultural land submerged.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pledged full assistance, stating, “We are leaving no stone unturned in our flood‑control efforts.” Relief teams set up four shelters for over 450 displaced persons and operated six additional distribution centres. The state government dispatched water‑resources and disaster‑management ministers to the affected areas to oversee relief operations.
