Assam receives major funding for rural development and infrastructure

The Indian central government has allocated Rs 6,266.25 crore for eight northeastern states, including Assam, for the 2026-27 financial year under the Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) scheme. This scheme, which replaced MGNREGA on July 1, 2026, focuses on creating durable community infrastructure in areas such as water security, core rural infrastructure, livelihood-related assets, and extreme weather mitigation. Assam has been allocated Rs 1,929.70 crore, with an initial installment of Rs 630.96 crore already released.

In a separate development, the Assam Cabinet has approved the ‘Viksit Assam’ plan, a five-year infrastructure and development program valued at ₹50,000 crore. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity, healthcare, education, power, and flood control. Funding will be sourced from state revenue (approximately ₹20,000 crore) and NABARD (approximately ₹30,000 crore). As part of this plan, the government approved a 30 MW solar power project in the Goalpara district, which includes a 25 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
