Assam schools to reopen after August 15 following floods

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced that classes in flood-affected schools across the Sivasagar, Nazira, and Charaideo districts are expected to resume after August 15. The reopening is contingent upon receding floodwaters and the completion of essential restoration work to address damage caused by recent flooding.

More than 150 schools in these districts remain submerged or have been severely impacted by mud and silt deposits. In Nazira, the Nazira Adarsha Vidyabhavan, located within the ONGC residential colony, is struggling to reopen as thick layers of silt and debris cover the campus. While school authorities requested assistance from ONGC for cleaning, they were reportedly told that measures would take time, leading teachers to manually clear mud to restore functionality.

Local MLA Dr. Jayaprakash Das recently visited the Nazira school to assist with cleaning efforts. The Education Department is currently assessing the condition of affected campuses to ensure they are safe and fit for students and teachers before regular academic activities restart.
