Assam monsoon flooding and educational impact

Overview

Heavy monsoon rains in Assam have caused severe flooding, resulting in at least 101 deaths and the displacement of thousands. The floods submerged homes and schools, particularly in districts such as Charaideo, Sivasagar, Nazira, Jorhat, and Golaghat. In the village of Nepali Khuti, devastation included the destruction of approximately 200 concrete houses and over 1,000 livestock.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reported that the flooding has caused approximately Rs 480 crore in damages and affected 26,681 houses across the state. To assist those impacted, the government has disbursed roughly Rs 146 to 150 crore in interim relief, providing Rs 15,000 to 96,842 families. While the first phase of damage assessment is nearing completion, a second phase is expected to conclude by September 10 or 11. The government aims to release final compensation amounts before the Durga Puja festival.

Regarding education and infrastructure, 793 schools are undergoing repairs to facilitate the resumption of classes. In Sivasagar, high-capacity pumps are being utilized to drain low-lying areas. Additionally, the state plans to expedite the construction of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in the hardest-hit districts of Charaideo and Sivasagar.

While residents in Nepali Khuti gathered to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day despite their losses, broader concerns regarding urban flooding have emerged. Engineering studies in Guwahati suggest that rapid urbanization and inadequate road drainage have exacerbated flooding in areas such as Jorabat and Ninth Mile.
