Assisi hosts international religious leaders for peace summit

More than 380 religious leaders and heads of churches gathered in Assisi, Italy, for the international meeting ‘Disarmed and Disarming Peace,’ organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio. The event marks the 40th anniversary of the historic 1986 meeting of religious leaders promoted by Pope John Paul II.

Participants included diverse figures such as the Grand Rabbi of France, the Imam of the Great Mosque of Jakarta, and representatives of Japanese Buddhism. The summit focused on the responsibility of religions to foster dialogue and combat the culture of rearmament amidst global conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan. Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo opened the proceedings by highlighting the suffering of refugees, widows, and orphans caused by war.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella sent a message to the community, emphasizing that while governments must sow the seeds of peace, every individual has a responsibility to act. The summit aims to reaffirm the value of fraternity and the necessity of international law in protecting human dignity.
