Religious leaders gather in Assisi for peace summit

Overview

Pope Francis has issued several calls for global peace, justice, and solidarity. In early October, he dedicated the month to daily Rosary prayers through the ‘A Million Children Praying the Rosary’ initiative, which seeks to address conflicts in regions such as the Holy Land, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan, Venezuela, Cuba, South Sudan, and Ukraine. Following this, the Pope emphasized the Catholic Church’s mission to oppose the “oppression of the poor and unjust structures that perpetuate inequality.”

Pope Leo XIV also convened an international meeting at the Vatican from October 7 to 14 to mark the tenth anniversary of the apostolic exhortation ‘Amoris Laetitia’, focusing on the role of the family. Due to health considerations following recent surgery, Pope Leo XIV is expected to participate in upcoming peace initiatives via video link.

On October 24, the Community of Sant’Egidio began hosting the ‘Unarmed and Disarming Peace’ summit in Assisi, Italy, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the historic 1986 day of prayer for peace. More than 380 religious leaders and heads of churches, including the Grand Rabbi of France and the Imam of the Great Mosque of Jakarta, gathered to discuss the responsibility of religions to combat the “culture of rearmament” amidst conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan. Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo opened the proceedings by highlighting the suffering of refugees, widows, and orphans. Italian President Sergio Mattarella sent a message noting that while governments must sow the seeds of peace, every individual holds a responsibility to act.
