Italy commemorates 800th anniversary of St Francis with nationwide Perdono celebrations
Across Italy, the eighth centenary of Saint Francis of Assisi’s death is being marked in August 2026 with a series of religious and cultural events known as the Festa del Perdono. The indulgence of the Porziuncola can be obtained by the faithful through sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion and prayer according to papal intentions, and is traditionally granted on 1–2 August. Bishop Guglielmo will celebrate a Mass on 1 August at the Santa Chiara Monastery in Imperia, while localities such as Marigliano, Sant'Antimo, and Assisi host pilgrimages, masses and confession slots throughout the two‑day period.
The celebrations extend beyond liturgy: the DeMusicAssisi festival runs 4–9 August with over thirty free concerts, workshops and medieval‑instrument performances, and the medieval‑Renaissance theatre festival in Anagni opens on 22 August, both highlighting the cultural legacy of the saint.
