800th anniversary of St Francis – May–Oct 2026

Overview

The 800th anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi continues to drive global cultural, religious, and diplomatic activities. Following the declaration by Pope Leo XIV of a Franciscan Jubilee Year, celebrations have intensified around themes of peace, fraternity, and environmental stewardship.

In September 2026, Italian commemorations expanded through diverse initiatives. In Rome, the Università Cattolica hosted discussions on ‘Healthy Longevity on a Healthy Planet,’ while the Eco Sanfra festival in Umbria addressed the climate crisis. Heritage efforts included the restoration and digitization of historical parchments by Fondazione Terna in Assisi. International observances included activities in Mexico, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Germany.

In October 2026, focus centered on the anniversary of the saint’s death. In Assisi, Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Cardinal Matteo Zuppi issued a global appeal for peace, with Mattarella criticizing the practice of ‘blessing weapons in the name of religion.’ Commemorations expanded globally in mid-October. In Brazil, the municipality of Rodeio unveiled a 14-meter-tall crochet tree featuring animal figures to symbolize the saint’s connection to nature. In London, St Peter’s Italian Church held a day of reflection addressing peace, solidarity, and the impact of artificial intelligence. In Sicily, Franciscan orders met to discuss missionary work and support for migrants.

In mid-to-late October, celebrations intensified through art and music. In Poland, Krakow hosted an exhibition of artworks by Brother Sidival Fili. In Italy, Assisi featured a large-scale floral arrangement titled ‘Nel segno del Tau, un Cantico di Pace’ created by Spello artists. Other Italian tributes included an exhibition of works by masters like Botticelli in Arezzo, a musical dialogue between Franciscan traditions and the poetry of Rumi in Rome, and various sacred music performances in Trento, Somma Lombardo, Vibo Valentia, and Venegono Inferiore. In Spain, local brotherhoods held a historical pilgrimage in Ceuta.
