Assistive technology advances improve accessibility for disabled users

New assistive technologies are enhancing autonomy for individuals with visual and motor impairments. Visionauta, an application developed by software engineer Jonathan Santos, utilizes artificial intelligence to act as a real-time companion for blind or low-vision users. By using a smartphone camera, the AI can describe environments, identify objects, read text, and interpret musical scores. The tool has recently expanded to support eleven languages, including English, Spanish, French, and Chinese.

In Spain, the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria has implemented eye-tracking technology to assist patients with severe neuromotor disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This system allows patients to control computers or tablets using only their gaze, enabling them to select words, phrases, or pictograms to communicate. The initiative, funded by 8.4 million euros from European Union recovery funds, aims to preserve patient autonomy and social participation as speech and mobility decline.
