ASSTRA calls for ambitious investment in Italian public transport
At the 20th ASSTRA National Convention in Rome, Association President Andrea Gibelli called for a new, ambitious development plan for Italy's local public transport. Gibelli emphasized that continued investment is essential to addressing national energy, environmental, economic, and social policies.
The transport sector in Italy currently generates approximately 12 billion euros in turnover, employs 113,000 people, and serves 15 million passengers daily. ASSTRA estimates that every 1 euro generated by local public transport stimulates 4 euros in the broader economy.
To sustain growth following the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) cycle, Gibelli stated that the country requires certain resources to program new infrastructure, vehicles, and services. He also highlighted the need for clear regulatory rules aligned with European frameworks to encourage competition and service contracts that reflect the industrial and commercial nature of the sector.
