Italian public transport investment and development
Overview
The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) announced a plan to allocate €100 million by 2027 to renew and expand local public transport fleets. Funded by 2023 ETS auction proceeds, the initiative targets metropolitan areas exceeding nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter limits. The program supports electric, hydrogen, hybrid, or methane-powered vehicles, as well as electric and hybrid vessels for lagoon mobility.
Following this, at the 20th ASSTRA National Convention in Rome, Association President Andrea Gibelli called for a new, ambitious development plan for local public transport. Gibelli emphasized that continued investment is necessary to support national energy, environmental, economic, and social policies. He noted that the sector serves 15 million passengers daily and argued that resources are required to program new infrastructure, vehicles, and services to sustain growth beyond the PNRR cycle.
