Astronomers discover binary neutron star system and mysterious radio source

Researchers in China have discovered a binary neutron star system, designated PSR J1856-0039, using the FAST radio telescope. The system has a total mass approximately 2.488 times that of the Sun, providing new opportunities to study gravity and test Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

Separately, astronomers are investigating a mysterious radio transient object named VT J1906+0849, located at least 49,000 light-years from Earth. According to a study led by Jessie Miller from the California Institute of Technology, the object has remained highly bright in the radio spectrum for approximately two decades, exhibiting unexpected changes in its peak emission frequency. Data from the Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS) and earlier surveys indicate the signal appeared after 1996 and reached significant intensity levels in recent years, though its exact nature remains a subject of study.
