Astronomers identify remnant radio galaxies and resolve JWST red dot mystery
Astronomers have made significant discoveries regarding the evolution and nature of distant galaxies. Researchers from the University of Cape Town and the Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy identified a population of “remnant” radio galaxies. These objects represent the final evolutionary stage of radio galaxies, occurring when jets from a central active galactic nucleus (AGN) shut down and cease to power radio lobes. Multi-wavelength observations using telescopes such as MeerKAT, uGMRT, LOFAR, and the Jansky Very Large Array confirmed that 12 of 14 candidates are indeed remnant galaxies, with spectral ages ranging from 8 to 42 million years.
In a separate finding, scientists have addressed the mystery of the “little red dots” captured by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Previously enigmatic, these compact and intensely red objects have been identified as extremely dense galaxies. Statistical analysis of over 200 images reveals that these dots are not isolated but are surrounded by compact, star-filled galaxies. These structures, which existed over 10 billion years ago, are significantly more compact than typical galaxies of that era and may indicate the presence of early supermassive black hole seeds.
