Overview

In early July 2026 JWST observations of the distant galaxy cluster XLSSC 122 and the Milky Way bulge object Terzan 5 revealed a surprisingly large mass and multiple stellar populations, challenging prevailing models of large‑scale structure formation and bulge evolution. Later that month researchers reported that the enigmatic “Small Red Points” detected by JWST are likely precursors of globular clusters, each harbouring an extremely massive star whose brief life leaves distinctive chemical signatures. A July 24 study reinforced this view, comparing the red points to evolutionary ancestors that persist beyond the primitive universe.

A follow‑up paper published on July 27 identified numerous “Little Red Dots” (LRDs) seen 13.2–12.2 billion years ago. The authors offered two interpretations: the LRDs may be globular clusters in formation, dominated by super‑massive stars, or they could represent short, intense phases of supermassive black‑hole activity. Both studies note that such objects were abundant shortly after the Big Bang and then declined rapidly, highlighting their possible role in early‑universe structure formation.
