JWST red-point studies on early clusters & black holes
Overview
In early July 2026, JWST observations of the distant galaxy cluster XLSSC 122 and the Milky Way bulge object Terzan 5 revealed unusually massive, evolved systems with multiple stellar populations, challenging current cosmological models of structure formation. These findings prompted the proposal that the enigmatic “Small Red Points” are precursors of globular clusters containing extremely massive stars. A July 24 study reinforced this, describing the red points as evolutionary ancestors that could persist beyond the primitive universe. A July 27 paper identified numerous compact, bright objects called Little Red Dots (LRDs) existing 13.2–12.2 billion years ago, suggesting they are either globular clusters dominated by super-massive stars or brief phases of supermassive black-hole activity. By August 1, multi-wavelength analysis of the “Saguaro” galaxy supported the black-hole scenario, finding red sources consistent with obscured, actively accreting supermassive black holes. On August 8, research introduced a third nuance: LRDs might be supermassive stars—up to 100,000 times the Sun's mass—that undergo violent pulsations and eject gas shells, potentially serving as seeds for the universe's first supermassive black holes. On August 16, research published in Nature regarding the ‘Mirage or Miracle’ survey detailed the object MoM-BH*-1, observed approximately 660 million years after the Big Bang. This ‘black hole star’ is a hybrid consisting of a central black hole with a mass roughly 100,000 times that of the Sun, surrounded by an immense, dense cocoon of hydrogen gas. By August 19, researchers noted that approximately 70% of analyzed LRDs showed evidence of gas orbiting at high speeds, indicating accretion disks. On August 21, new analysis of nine massive, mature galaxies suggested that primordial galaxies may be three to four times more massive than previously estimated.
