Astronomers propose new theories for mysterious 'little red dots

Astronomers are investigating the nature of 'little red dots,' mysterious, compact, and bright reddish objects observed by the James Webb Space Telescope in the early universe. Two primary theories have emerged to explain these phenomena.

One study led by researchers at the Harvard College Observatory suggests these dots may be supermassive stars, potentially 100,000 times more massive than the Sun. These giant stars could serve as the seeds for the universe's first supermassive black holes. Computer models indicate these stars undergo violent pulsations that eject large shells of gas, which may account for the unusual hydrogen signatures and compact appearance observed in telescope imagery.

An alternative perspective focuses on active galactic nuclei. By studying the 'Saguaro' galaxy, which exists at a more recent cosmic epoch, researchers found that a highly active supermassive black hole can be heavily masked by surrounding matter. When simulated at higher redshifts to mimic the early universe, the host galaxy's features become invisible, leaving only the bright, compact core visible. This could explain why these objects often lack the strong X-ray or radio emissions typically expected from active black holes.
