Violence in schools: attacks on teachers and students in Argentina and Paraguay

A series of violent incidents in educational institutions across Argentina and Paraguay has raised significant concerns regarding school safety and student behavior.

In San Nicolás, Argentina, a teacher at Escuela Secundaria N.º 5 was hospitalized after being physically assaulted by a student during a lesson regarding cell phone regulations. The student reportedly grabbed the teacher by her hair and threw her to the ground. Teacher unions SUTEBA and ENIA-FEB have demanded urgent protection measures and the creation of an intersectoral committee to address school violence.

In Asunción, Paraguay, a 15-year-old student was injured with a knife during a fight with a 16-year-old peer at the Escuela Nacional de Comercio N.º 3. The altercation, which was reportedly fueled by social media provocations, was witnessed by other students. Authorities have increased police presence at various schools following this and other incidents, including a confrontation between students of the Colegio Nacional de la Capital and Colegio Presidente Franco involving projectiles.

Additionally, students at the Universidad Nacional de Asunción have called for immediate infrastructure improvements on Route PY02 following a serious accident involving a university student.
