Security incidents at educational institutions in Asunción
Overview
Security concerns have emerged at educational institutions in Asunción, Paraguay. On October 16, the National University of Asunción (UNA) suspended all academic activities as a preventive measure after receiving mass emails threatening an armed attack. University Rector Zully Vera noted this was the first time the institution had received such “intimidating” messages, and the National Police began investigating the IP addresses used to send the threats.
On October 26, police investigated a separate incident where students from Colegio Presidente Franco allegedly targeted the Colegio Nacional de la Capital (CNC) with stones and firecrackers. During the investigation, authorities detained eight individuals in Colegio Presidente Franco uniforms and one adult, Gustavo Villalba. While some CNC students reported injuries and alleged the presence of firearms, police stated that “no weapons were found” during the detentions.
In a related escalation in the Sajonia neighborhood, a 15-year-old student was injured with a knife during a fight with a 16-year-old classmate at the Escuela Nacional de Comercio N.º 3. The altercation, which was reportedly fueled by social media provocations, was witnessed by other students and resulted in wounds to the victim's arm, chest, and abdomen; the student was later reported to be in stable condition.
In response to these incidents, the Ministry of Education and local authorities are coordinating with police to monitor social media for threats and strengthen security at educational centers. Authorities have increased police presence at various schools following these confrontations.
