Asunción celebrates 489th anniversary with new religious monument

Asunción is celebrating its 489th anniversary of foundation with various cultural and religious activities. The festivities include civic-military parades, student marches, and traditional fairs featuring local crafts and food.

A central highlight of the commemorations is the inauguration of a new bronze monument dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the patron saint of Paraguay and the Armed Forces. Located at the Costanera Norte near the Government Palace, the 3.5-meter sculpture by artist Ingrid Seall stands on a 5.5-meter pedestal.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including President Santiago Peña, First Lady Leticia Ocampos, Mayor Luis Bello, and Cardinal Adalberto Martínez. The monument was commissioned by the Archdiocese of Asunción and funded through private donations and faithful devotees to serve as a symbol of national identity and faith.
