Asunción foundation and patron saint commemorations

Asunción, Paraguay, marked its 489th anniversary of foundation with religious and historical commemorations.

On the eve of the anniversary, a new bronze monument dedicated to the Virgin of Asunción, the nation’s patron saint, was inaugurated at the Costanera Norte. The sculpture, created by artist Ingrid Seall, features a crown of 17 stars representing the country's departments. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including President Santiago Peña, First Lady Leticia Ocampos, Mayor Luis Bello, and Cardinal Adalberto Martínez.

The city’s foundation, originally established as the military fort ‘Nuestra Señora de la Asunción’ in 1537, was highlighted as a historical milestone. Often referred to as the ‘Mother of Cities,’ the settlement’s origins involved a pact between Spanish explorer Juan de Salazar y Espinosa and the Carios tribe, characterized by a lack of violence and subsequent cultural mestizaje.

Public festivities included the ASUFEST 489 event, organized by Mayor Luis Bello, which drew approximately 40,000 people to the Costanera. The festival featured musical performances by the Asunción City Symphony Orchestra and various national artists; admission was free in exchange for donations of non-perishable food items for social initiatives. Other ongoing celebrations include civic-military parades, student marches, and traditional fairs. These observances coincide with broader religious honors for the Virgin of the Assumption across Latin America, including processions in Guatemala City, Nicaragua, and Argentina.
