Asunción Municipal Council calls extraordinary session amid union protests
The Municipal Council of Asunción has called for an extraordinary session following repeated failures to reach a quorum. Previous sessions were suspended due to the absence of opposition councilors, who have raised concerns regarding the legitimacy and timing of a new collective bargaining agreement negotiated between municipal unions and the city administration.
The dispute has led to significant unrest, including protests and blockades by municipal unions such as Sitrama, Sinoema, and Simuca. Demonstrators blocked access to the tax collection area and offices handling driver's licenses and permits. Union leaders, including Gladys Galeano and Alberto Gaona, have maintained their stance amidst heated verbal exchanges with council members.
Opposition councilors have criticized the agreement, alleging it was negotiated “behind the back of the Municipal Council” and carries an “electoral scent” due to its proximity to upcoming municipal elections. In response to the pressure, the Council President, Arturo Almirón, and union representatives have reportedly agreed to hold a new ordinary session on Friday.
