Paraguay: Asunción mayoral race intensifies
Overview
Following the June 7 internal primaries, Camilo Pérez secured the ANR nomination for mayor of Asunción with 61.45% of the vote. The contest remains a matchup between the ANR’s unified front and the “Juntos por Asunción” opposition coalition, led by former minister Soledad Núñez.
In late July, Pérez and council candidate Óscar “Piriki” Rodríguez met with city leaders to consolidate the Lista 1 campaign, emphasizing unity to address municipal finances, safety, and infrastructure. Pérez officially launched his campaign on 6 August at the Puerto de Asunción, centered on a platform of transparency and digitalization. Throughout August, Pérez focused on grassroots engagement and party consolidation. On 15 August, he visited the Bañado Sur neighborhood to discuss essential infrastructure like water and electricity. During this visit, Arnaldo Samaniego described the political alignment within the Colorado Party as a “genuine unity.”
On 22 August, Pérez met with coordinators from the Causa Republicana movement to further unify Lista 1. Recent polling from Ati Snead Consultores shows Pérez maintaining a significant lead with 52.1% voter preference, holding a 16.9 percentage point advantage over Núñez. Pérez has also utilized the ‘Camilo en tu barrio’ initiative to provide community services.
As the municipal elections approach, Pérez has continued to ramp up his campaign activities, holding meetings with youth groups and local party leadership to consolidate his presence throughout the capital. In early September, Pérez announced a city-wide ‘banderazo’ rally for 9 September as part of his final electoral campaign stages. This follows a period of neighborhood walks focused on local concerns such as waste collection, potholes, and the maintenance of public squares. Additionally, Pérez confirmed he will not participate in the second session of the CODEASU Forum, noting that his absence was formally communicated due to his campaign schedule.
