Argentine education sectors face salary and funding crises

Public education sectors in Argentina are facing significant labor and financial tensions. In Neuquén, the teachers' union ATEN, led by Fanny Mancilla, has formally requested the reopening of salary negotiations for 2027. The union argues that current salaries must reflect the high cost of living in the province, driven by the Vaca Muerta energy sector, and has questioned government data regarding teacher absenteeism.

Simultaneously, the national university system is in a critical state due to funding shortages. Rectors from several institutions, including the Universidad Nacional del Litoral and the Universidad Nacional de Rosario, have met with legislators to demand the immediate implementation of the University Financing Law. They warned that without adequate resources in the 2027 budget, the system faces a ‘terminal phase’ that threatens basic services, research, and infrastructure.

University leaders, including Franco Bartolacci, President of the National Interuniversity Council (CIN), have criticized the national government for failing to comply with judicial orders and legislative mandates regarding educational funding. While some sectors have engaged in national strikes, others, such as the rector of UNLaR, have advocated for maintaining classes as a way to defend public education through dialogue rather than solely through work stoppages.
