Athens building collapse prompts rescue operation and arrests

On June 30 a four‑storey residential building in the Petralona district of Athens collapsed during construction work on an adjacent site. Rescue teams searched for four occupants – three men and a woman – who were initially reported missing. All were later located after family members made contact, but crews continued to sweep the rubble for any others.

Approximately 30 firefighters, eight fire engines, a special rescue vehicle, two search dogs, police officers, emergency‑medical units and utility workers were deployed. Hospitals in the city were placed on standby. Five individuals, including the owner and the contractor of the nearby construction, were detained for questioning about the legality of the building permits, as authorities investigated whether the collapsed structure had been built without proper authorization.

No fatalities were reported, but the incident highlights concerns over building safety and regulatory compliance in Greece.
