Petralona collapse: authorities order rubble removal

Overview

On 30 June 2026 a four‑storey residential block in Athens’ Petralona district collapsed while demolition work on an adjacent plot was under way. Rescue teams deployed firefighters, police, emergency‑medical units and search dogs; three occupants escaped and a fourth was later located, leaving no fatalities. Police detained five people – the property owner, contractor, supervising engineer and two workers – on suspicion of building‑code violations.

The municipality opened emergency shelters at local clubs, provided each of the seven displaced families with a €3,000 grant and arranged short‑term accommodation through Airbnb and hotels. Early July, a dispute emerged over who should clear the roughly 500 tonne rubble – municipal, regional or private owners – delaying forensic examinations.

On 14 July, Prosecutor Aristidis Koreas ordered the municipal technical services, with possible regional assistance, to begin immediate rubble removal and to define a procedural plan the next day. The aim was to enable forensic experts to continue their investigation, retrieve trapped belongings and address health‑safety concerns.

Investigations have focused on the adjacent excavation, including a February contract for an underground parking garage, as a likely cause of the collapse. Displaced residents continue to receive temporary shelter, financial aid and private donations while the criminal probe proceeds.
