Athens gas explosion kills six, including four Americans

A gas explosion in the Plaka district of Athens killed six people on September 26, 2026, causing a three-story building to collapse near the Acropolis. Among the deceased were four Americans: Ian Alexander Kirkpatrick, Florida Hoxha, Florin Hoxha, and Eris Cani. The remaining two victims were British national Edmond Hings and his Greek wife, Athena Papaprescou, who owned the building.

Investigations have revealed significant discrepancies regarding the building's safety and legal status. Records show the construction permit dates back to 1979, and there is no official documentation for subsequent modifications or the installation of natural gas. Athens Deputy Mayor Andreas Grammatikogiannis confirmed the lack of records for any work performed after the original 1979 permit.

Local residents had reportedly issued prior warnings to officials regarding gas leaks and electrical hazards in the area. Additionally, a resident had alerted authorities to a possible gas smell before the blast. The explosion also injured two others and caused damage to nearby structures.
