Plaka district explosion and building collapse

Overview

A powerful explosion in the historic Plaka district of Athens caused a multi-story building on Lysicratous Street to collapse. The blast, which occurred shortly after 7:30 AM on Friday, September 25, 2026, near the intersection of Lysicratous and Queen Amalia streets, was heard across much of central Athens and triggered a small fire.

Emergency services, including the Hellenic Fire Service, Greek Police, and ENAON EDA gas technicians, responded to the scene. Firefighters rescued two women from a neighboring building, both of whom were transported to Georgios Gennimatas Hospital, while one passerby was injured by flying debris. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, utilizing specialized equipment and dogs to search the rubble for missing persons. There are reports of five individuals potentially missing, including an elderly couple believed to reside on the second floor and three tourists, possibly Americans, staying in an Airbnb on the first floor.

The building, which contained an Airbnb on the first floor, has been declared a total loss, and adjacent structures have sustained significant damage, including broken windows and damaged storefronts. Preliminary investigations suggest a potential natural gas leak may have caused the incident, as witnesses reported a “strong odor of gas” prior to the blast. The Athens Arson Crimes Investigation Unit is conducting a formal inquiry while the area remains cordoned off for safety inspections and traffic in the immediate vicinity remains restricted.
