Athens hosts exhibition on Greek and American democratic foundations
U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoil and Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni inaugurated the traveling exhibition ‘Founding Democracy in Greece and America’ at the Ancient Agora of Athens on Wednesday, September 16.
The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) and is part of a year-long global celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. It explores the democratic ideals that have connected Greece and the United States for over two centuries.
By hosting the event at the Ancient Agora, a site central to the birth of democratic practice, the exhibition highlights the historical links between Greek traditions of civic participation and the political thought that shaped the United States. The ASCSA has been a partner in preserving Greece’s cultural heritage and managing excavations at the site since 1931.
