Athens International Airport reports 4.5% passenger growth in H1 2026

Athens International Airport (AIA) reported a 4.5% increase in passenger traffic during the first half of 2026, reaching 15.8 million passengers. Despite geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East and high fuel prices, demand remains strong. Consequently, AIA management has revised its annual growth forecast to a mid-single-digit increase.

To accommodate this growth, AIA is restructuring its expansion strategy. The company is moving toward a more flexible, modular approach for its 40-million-passenger capacity plan, with potential to exceed this limit if economically viable. Capital expenditures for expansion through 2030 are estimated at 950 million euros.

Regional Greek airports managed by Fraport Greece are also seeing growth, with passenger numbers expected to reach approximately 39 million for the year.

In local transit, Athens Metro Line 3 has implemented temporary service adjustments due to track replacement works between Eleonas and Monastiraki, affecting evening schedules and station closures.
