Athens Metro Line 1 introduces first fully reconstructed train

The first fully reconstructed train has entered service on Athens Metro Line 1 (ISAP), marking the first addition of renewed rolling stock to the historic line in 22 years. The train successfully completed all factory, technical, and operational testing and certifications before joining daily passenger service.

This project is the first of 14 trains scheduled for full reconstruction. The process involves retaining the original metal chassis while completely replacing mechanical, electrical, and functional systems. Upgrades include modern AC motors, new traction systems, advanced information and safety systems, and improved interior accessibility.

The reconstruction is being carried out in Volos by the Spanish company CAF on behalf of Stas S.A., with funding from the NSRF (ESPA). A second train is currently undergoing static testing in Volos, and four others are being reconstructed simultaneously. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2027, aiming to ensure reliable operation for at least another 25 years and increase service frequency.
