Athens Metro Line 1 rolling stock modernization
Overview
The Athens Metro Line 1 (ISAP) has begun a modernization program involving the full reconstruction of 14 trains. The first reconstructed train has entered daily passenger service after completing technical and operational testing.
The reconstruction process, conducted in Volos by the Spanish company CAF on behalf of Stas S.A., involves retaining original metal chassis while replacing mechanical, electrical, and functional systems. Upgrades include modern AC motors, new traction systems, advanced safety systems, improved interior accessibility, LED lighting, and CCTV security.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis inspected the first train set. The project, funded by the NSRF (ESPA), is expected to be completed by 2027 and aims to increase service frequency and ensure reliable operation for at least another 25 years.
