Athens opens shelter for residents after Petralona building collapse
The Municipality of Athens activated a full emergency response after a four‑storey residential building collapsed in the Petralona neighbourhood. Municipal services coordinated with the fire brigade and other authorities to secure the site and manage traffic.
A temporary shelter was opened at the Lower Petralona Friendship Club (Athinodorou 61) to house displaced families. Social workers and municipal staff provide basic necessities, emergency financial aid, and ongoing support. Police oversee traffic flow, a municipal drone supplies live aerial monitoring, and street‑work crews deliver water and assistance to rescue teams. Waste‑management units stand ready with equipment, and the city’s contractor registry has mobilised additional machinery.
