Athens smart cameras record 5,785 traffic violations

Smart cameras utilizing artificial intelligence have recorded 5,785 traffic violations on major roads in Athens since their implementation. The digital system automates the detection, verification, and electronic notification of vehicle owners regarding infractions.

Running red lights is the most frequent violation, accounting for 43.4% of all recorded incidents. Under the new Highway Code, red-light violations incur a 700 euro fine and a two-month driver's license suspension. Other significant infractions include the driver's failure to wear a seatbelt, which carries a 350 euro fine and a one-month license suspension, and the passenger's failure to wear a seatbelt, which results in a 150 euro fine for both the passenger and the driver.

Total fines generated from just these three categories—red-light violations, driver seatbelt non-compliance, and passenger seatbelt non-compliance—amount to approximately 2.5 million euros. Specifically, red-light violations have resulted in roughly 1.76 million euros in fines.
