Athens Stock Exchange hits 17-year high amid banking growth
The Greek economy and financial markets are experiencing several significant developments. The Athens Stock Exchange recently reached a 17-year high, driven by strong performance in the banking sector and blue-chip companies like DEHE and Titan Cement. However, some profit-taking has occurred following these peaks. In the corporate sector, Allwyn reported strong Q2 2026 results, with net revenues rising 27% to 1.246 billion euros.
Regarding debt management, banks and servicers are preparing for major changes in September concerning 'Katseli law' loans. Following a Supreme Court decision, interest will be calculated on monthly installments rather than the total balance, potentially leading to interest refunds for some of the 100,000 affected borrowers. The estimated economic impact is approximately 700 million euros.
In infrastructure, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is in discussions with the European Commission to extend existing concessions to fund the Elefsina–Oinofyta highway project, which has a budget near 1 billion euros. Meanwhile, the consumer market is seeing a rise in the popularity of refurbished smartphones as consumers seek more affordable premium options amid high new device prices and chip supply constraints. In tourism, Lemnos reported significant growth in accommodation turnover, increasing by 25.6% in Q2 2026.
