Greece markets rally, tourism and investment surge

Overview

The Athens General Index has remained above the 2,500‑point level, closing recently at 2,508 points with €248 million of turnover. Valuations stay attractive (P/E ≈10.5×, P/B 1.5×, dividend yield ~4.8 %) and year‑to‑date returns near 22 %, supported by strong foreign inflows into banks, energy and construction firms. JP Morgan has upgraded Greek equities to overweight, expecting more than €1 billion of net inflows after Greece’s inclusion in the Eurostoxx and MSCI Developed Markets indices. Tourism continues its rapid expansion – international arrivals in H1 2026 rose 38 % and visitor spending 64 % year‑on‑year, the fastest pace in Europe. Foreign direct investment reached a record $12.9 billion in 2025, reinforced by policy measures such as fuel‑price cuts, a €150 child allowance and new rail services. The Bank of Greece projects inflation to climb to 3.8 % in 2026, driven mainly by energy prices, and notes a higher likelihood of two additional ECB rate hikes by mid‑2027. Despite this, the market has held its momentum, aided by U.S. inflation easing and stable commodity prices. ElvalHalcor’s impact grew further: a study showed the group contributed 0.56 % of Greece’s 2025 GDP, generated €2.3 billion in production value, exported €2.5 billion (8 % of industrial exports) and supported about 20,900 jobs. The company raised up to €250 million through a capital increase of up to 75 million new shares at a price up to €4.86, with 20 % offered to the public and the remainder placed with qualified institutional investors abroad. Proceeds will fund its 2026‑2030 business plan. On 13 July, U.S.–Iran naval tensions lifted Brent crude to $86, briefly nudging the Athens Index just below the 2,500‑point psychological level before it closed slightly above. Energy stocks rose, while banks fell, and trading volume on the exchange reached €247.8 million.
