Athens Stock Exchange transitions to developed markets amid EU fund milestones

Greece is entering a transformative phase for its financial markets and economy. The Athens Stock Exchange is celebrating its 150th anniversary, marked by its integration into the Euronext group and its reclassification from emerging to developed markets by major indices such as STOXX, S&P Dow Jones, and FTSE Russell. This transition is expected to trigger significant capital inflows, with analysts estimating potential inflows of several billion euros, particularly targeting systemic banks and energy companies.

Simultaneously, Greece is approaching the final stages of utilizing its Recovery and Resilience Facility. Approximately 11 billion euros, representing about 5% of the national GDP, remain to be disbursed. This process involves meeting numerous milestones and targets. Looking ahead, the country is preparing for a new multi-year funding cycle through the European Union, which could involve a new national reform plan worth up to 50 billion euros.

In the domestic banking sector, reports from the IMF highlight a high concentration of credit exposure among the four systemic banks, with significant lending directed toward a small group of large business groups. While the banking system remains resilient, the IMF emphasizes the need for close monitoring of this concentration risk alongside the ongoing efforts to manage non-performing loans.
