Athens Stock Exchange hits 17-year highs amid market volatility

The Athens Stock Exchange has experienced significant volatility, reaching new 17-year highs before facing downward pressure. On September 30, 2026, the General Index closed at 2,738.35 points, marking a 1.05% increase and its sixth consecutive monthly gain. This surge brought the index to levels not seen since 2009, driven largely by strong performance in the banking sector and blue-chip stocks.

However, market conditions remain sensitive to international factors. Rising US Treasury yields and fluctuations in oil prices have created an uncertain environment, leading to periodic sell-offs. While the Greek market has shown resilience, with the index frequently testing the 2,700-point mark, investors remain cautious regarding global inflation and central bank interest rate policies.

In a separate structural development, Euronext Athens has completed the spin-off of its Market Operator division. Following a shareholder decision, the division managing regulated markets and derivatives has been absorbed into Euronext Athens Monoprosopi A.E., which now serves as the universal successor to the rights and obligations of the former sector.
