Athens Stock Exchange rebounds as banks drive 1.56% index rise

The Athens Stock Exchange experienced a strong recovery on Monday, with the General Index closing at 2,569.82 points, a 1.56% increase. This rebound follows a recent sell-off and was primarily driven by the banking sector, which saw its index rise by 3.19% to 2,922.77 points.

Major banking gains included Alpha Bank (+4.27%), Eurobank (+3.98%), Piraeus Bank (+3.41%), and Bank of Cyprus (+2.77%). Other notable performers included GEK TERNAs (+3.43%) and Aegean Airlines (+2.93%). Conversely, Allwyn (OPAP) saw the largest decline among blue chips, falling 4.52%.

The market sentiment was further bolstered by S&P Global maintaining Greece’s BBB credit rating with a stable outlook. S&P projections suggest Greece could achieve a primary surplus of 3.8% of GDP by 2026, supported by tax revenues, tourism, and lower unemployment. The agency also forecasts a reduction in public debt to 123% of GDP by 2026 and 107% by 2029.
