Athens Stock Exchange hits 17‑year high as banks and oil drive gains

The Athens Stock Exchange’s General Index surged to a 17‑year high of 2,571.90 points, up 1.25%, after a series of rallying sessions. Earlier in the week the index closed at 2,540.06 points (up 0.75%) and later traded around 2,575.23 points, a modest 0.13% rise.

Banking shares led the advance, with the banking sector index climbing to 2,937.6 points, a 0.32% increase. Major banks such as Piraeus Bank, Eurobank, National Bank of Greece and Alpha Bank accounted for the bulk of trading volume. Motor Oil shares broke the €50 level, reaching a new historical high.

Total turnover on the exchange hovered between €338 million and €364 million. The rally occurred despite a fragile international backdrop, including Brent crude near $90 per barrel, heightened Middle‑East tensions and the U.S. Federal Reserve’s pending interest‑rate decision.
