Athens Stock Exchange sees marginal gains amid energy price volatility

The Athens Stock Exchange has experienced a period of volatility, characterized by marginal gains and fluctuations around the 2,600-point psychological threshold. While the General Index saw slight increases, such as a 0.16% rise to 2,598.72 points in some sessions, the market struggled to maintain momentum. Banking stocks and energy companies have been primary drivers of market activity. Notably, Alpha Bank and Eurobank recorded high trading volumes, while HELLENiQ Energy reached new historical highs near 19 euros. Additionally, EYDAP saw a significant surge, reaching levels not seen in over two decades.

In the energy sector, wholesale electricity prices in Greece have shown extreme volatility linked to renewable energy production. Low output from wind and solar due to weather conditions recently drove prices up, making the Greek market among the most expensive in Europe. However, a subsequent increase in renewable energy forecasts led to a sharp decline in wholesale prices, shifting Greece from an expensive to a cheaper market overnight.

Broader economic discussions in Greece include IMF forecasts for the national economy, heating subsidies, and the rising cost of living affecting households. Financial analysts note that while the Greek economy shows resilience, geopolitical tensions and oil price fluctuations remain significant external risks.
