Athens Stock Exchange debuts in developed markets category

The Athens Stock Exchange has completed its first trading sessions following its reclassification into the developed markets category by FTSE Russell. This transition follows a historic rebalancing period that saw record-breaking transaction volumes exceeding 4.2 billion euros.

Market performance has been characterized by high volatility as investors seek new equilibrium. While the General Index showed resilience, closing with modest gains around 0.55% in recent sessions, individual sectors experienced significant shifts. Industrial, metal, and energy stocks, such as Viohalco, ElvalHalcor, and Metlen, saw strong upward momentum. Conversely, some energy companies like Motor Oil faced downward pressure.

The banking sector remains a central pillar of liquidity, with major systemic banks including Eurobank, National Bank of Greece, Piraeus Bank, and Alpha Bank seeing active trading and position adjustments. Analysts note that the market is moving from a phase driven by mandatory index rebalancing toward one focused on fundamental economic indicators, profitability, and cash flows as international investors reassess Greek equities within the developed market framework.
